Anyone can whistle

I recently sold my "anyone can whistle" necklace and the buyer, Claudia from Germany, told me she had bought it as a gift for her husband.

As it is quite an unusual necklace which is a whistle as well - I asked Claudia if she would mind telling me why she selected it and how she saw him using the whistle. Here's her idea behind the gift!

"The phrase "to do somebody's bidding" translates in German "to dance to somebody's whistle"; in other words, if you arrive in chaos, you whistle, get attention and go back to business.

My husband is working with disordered kids (like a "supernanny"- coming to families' homes, checking situations, helping parents and kids). He also works with kids in groups and imagine kids with ADHD/ADS in groups; that can be really loud. The whistle should act as a surprise for those situations.

Second, do you know the title song from "Gilmore Girls"? Carole King: Where you lead. The lyrics are "you just call my name and I'll be there ". Well, he can use the whistle then.

Overall, this is all symbolic; actually, my husband does not like necklaces; either he will wear it on a leather string or as his key ring... I will let you know :) His birthday is in 2 weeks time and it will be his 40th."

So 'Happy Birthday' to Claudia's husband. Hope he likes his birthday present and that the kids will soon associate the sound with him and his caring. Always great to hear where your creations go..... Thanks for letting me know Claudia.

Anyone can bring me flowers....

There is a little challenge going on at Etsy right now from one of the jewelry magazines. They are asking artists to submit items that they have made using 10g of metal clay or less......The 5 pieces they select, they will feature in their magazine....

So it got me thinking as to how small my "anyone" figure could be...... 10g of metal clay results in even less weight when the clay is fired......My largest anyone is "Anyone can whistle" as I needed the length for the whistle. The smallest so far is the anyone on "Anyone can fall in love". He is 24 mm tall and doesn't really seem small.....

Well - always up for a challenge, so I thought I'd make some anyone earrings.

The result is "Anyone can bring me flowers" and anyone is 15 mm tall. I guess I could go smaller - but I think 15mm is small enough!!! You wouldn't really see anyone if he was any smaller!

So this is a pair of anyone's - each is individual as I hand form them - are bringing you a sweet little flower held in both hands. Even though they don't have features, they look happy to be giving a flower. One looks proud - the one on the left and the other anyone looks a little more coy! What do you think?

And who doesn't love receiving flowers? From a single wildflower plucked from the garden to the most lavish of bouquets - receiving flowers is just one of those wonderful things.

My husband always says his favourite flowers are those that last the longest so if he buys me some, they'll last for months....like the Proteas we buy at Christmas - they gradually dry but still stay beautiful!! And maybe these earrings would be his perfect gift - the gift of everlasting flowers!

Anyone can ........fly a kite

So here is my latest "Anyone can...." piece. A necklace entitled "Anyone can....fly a kite"

It shows my new friend, Anyone, holding on tight to his new kite and you can just picture him loving that feeling as it takes to the skies and pulls on his arm - and then just for that split second, it takes you off the ground.




This picture here looks like he is just willing the kite to fly......that feeling when you want to blow and encourage it....try as you will, the wind hasn't quite got below it...

But then, the wind gusts and up the kite goes, and you are excited and you let out more string and then it feels like you can fly too!

What a lovely thing kite flying is. Yet you see very little of it nowadays...or is that just here? Maybe there aren't any empty beaches or parks anymore .....?

Anyhow - I hope you like my new Anyone and he gives you the feeling of up, up and away......

Anyone can.......whistle

I love to whistle. I do it quite a lot actually. Can often be heard whistling a tune.....and on many occasions I have been told that I whistle like a man. What exactly does that mean? Is it a compliment? Should I be proud? Should I try to whistle like a woman? Who knows - but it doesn't put me off whistling.

And I have a great whistling pal in my pet parrot Harold. (He looks a bit fluffed up here, as I just woke him up to take his photograph! Sorry Harold!!) He sings too - but he does have a lovely whistle - including a very flattering wolf whistle!

So a couple of days ago I was trying to decide what my next "anyone can...." piece would be - and I had the idea that anyone can whistle. So here is Anyone. Yes, he/she looks like just an ordinary figure - just hanging out from the chain as a necklace. But Anyone has a surprise! Hold Anyone up to your lips and blow - and "Anyone can whistle"!!!

I build the whistle part first. I'd never tried making a whistle before - and it was fiddly to get the sound to hit the correct part to the make the whistle....but when the metal clay was dry, I blew into it and it did make a sound.....so then I added and moulded Anyone onto the front of the whistle! Then I hoped that in the kiln it wouldn't all collapse or shrink in an uneven way and no longer sound. But it worked!

For those musical types out there, Anyone whistles an E (unless you don't blow fully and then it's an E flat!!!!). It's a pretty sound too. A nice clear tone. Maybe this will become the new tuning fork!!!
