Weekly bird in the hand

This week's things I am grateful for - my bird in the hand - is a short list of one.  And that is Maxwell.  He is my new grandson - born to Adam and Alexa.  He was born January 25th, weighing 7lbs and 4 oz.

He was born 11 days after my granddaughter Evelina.  Two babes in two weeks!  How great is that!  When Adam phoned shortly after Maxwell was born, I could hear little Max making gurgling noises down the phone! Our first hello!  My heart melted right there and then :-D

We fly back to England on Wednesday - so obviously we are going to have a wonderful time over there, cuddling with two new grandchildren!  How lucky are we?

Isn't that just a gorgeous photo!

Flying

Today we fly back to England for a couple of weeks.

We are leaving in about an hour, armed with a few books and some knitting to while away the time...and hopefully a good movie!  This weekend,  we are celebrating my parents Golden Wedding Anniversary - 50 years!  Definitely a reason to celebrate.

Then we have just sold our apartment in Cheltenham so some of the rest of the trip will be spent packing that up and putting the stuff all in storage.  The packing part will be happily interspersed with seeing John's family and maybe a couple of friends too.

I'll be keeping in touch with my "bird a week"!  Let's hope the flight goes quickly!

Safe landing

We've arrived back in England  - got here about 4.15pm (8:15am Pacific Time).  The flight was fine - no turbulence the whole trip - and thankfully the volcanic ash from Iceland didn't get in the way. Hopefully it won't tomorrow either, as our friends land at Heathrow then but the airport said there were "likely disruptions" on Tuesday! Fingers crossed.

Quick nap and now getting ready to have dinner out with family.

The sun was shining, then it poured with rain, and now it is grey!  So, nothing unexpected.

Snowed in!

We had planned to meet up with some friends today whom we initially met on vacation in the Galapagos Islands nearly 5 years ago. We try and meet up once a year when we come over to the UK and catch up on what everyone has been up to....But alas, today it didn't happen. Too much snow!

The branches as we look out of the window

Yes, things pretty much came to a stand still in England today. The country just doesn't cope well with snow as it happens so infrequently. There aren't lots of snow ploughs which stand idle for years and then all rush out on the rare occasions it is snowy! And no one is used to driving in snow so it all gets a bit scary on the roads.

Cheltenham Ladies College - they were still at school today but not many other schools were!!

So we just stayed home instead and wandered into town to do some shopping - only to find that most of the shops were shut. Yes, the snow fall was about 15 cm (6 inches) here - but a bit more in other parts of the country. In our New Hampshire days (we lived there for about 5 years), 6 inches of snow wouldn't have even warranted comment.

Some family are coming around for dinner tonight so we checked a few restaurants and most of them have decided to close for the night!!!

Gustav Holst conducting in the snow!

We heard a funny story on the radio too about this woman in Scotland who went shopping for a turkey on Christmas Eve - and still hasn't come home! A snowstorm came in and even now, she's not made it back to her husband! She's been staying in a friend's caravan for the last couple of weeks!! The good part is that the turkey is still frozen so won't have gone off!!!! They still don't know when the roads will be cleared for her to get back! I bet her husband is hungry!

So wherever you are - enjoy being home and warm!

The duck that didn't like water leaves float for England!

A little story to tell you..... Are you sitting comfortably?...then I'll begin...

About a month ago we had two mallard ducks coming to our pond everyday. They were quite handsome but never seemed to go in the water. One of them would sit on the bank under the weeping willow tree while the other one would sit on either the fountain in the mornings (they knew the fountain switched on in the afternoon - I'm sure one exposure of that was a big learning experience!!) or on our duck float.

The duck float is something that I encouraged John to build last year. It is not glamorous but the idea is that duck can use it for nesting so their nest is in the middle the pond and so safe from raccoons etc etc. I think John spent about $8 getting the parts to build this float and it was a proud moment when he launched it and secured it in the pond. No ducks went on it last year however which was quite disappointing, but this year Mr Mallard seemed to have it as his favorite lounging spot.

We were enjoying watching the mallards that didn't like water and so one day, I was emailing my friend Marion in Germany and told her about them and how happy they looked on the float. I sent her this photo:

Yes, not an elegant float but functional. And the perfect spot for a duck that doesn't like water.

Fast forward to the end of May this year, and Marion sends me an email entitled "you could have helped". It was all about the scandal of the MP's spending tax payers money. The issue that caught Marion's eye was that David Cameron asked Sir Peter Viggers what on earth a "nesting float for ducks" was. Apparently Sir Peter had bought one for 1645 pounds!

Here's the link Marion found to the story in the telegraph complete with photo:

Now OK. Their Swedish duck house is a little more elaborate than ours (but did cost a little more than $8) - and theirs actually includes a "house"..... but can you say that that duck looks any happier than ours? And maybe it is a little bigger than ours too - but you can still fit two ducks on ours as we often saw:

So the sad part is that I think our ducks saw the photo of the Swedish duck float online and we haven't seen them since at the pond! Call it coincidence if you like or float envy but since Marion sent me that photo, they've disappeared. I think they are on their way to England now.... Look out for them!!

Anyhow - in memory of our little duck that didn't like water, I've just finished a little keepsake. Maybe this will get the whole sad story out of my system - and bring a smile to Marion's face too!

Yes, a solid silver duck float and still costs less than Sir Peter's!!! For all those MP wannabies - your very own duck float ring!

A year of towns/cities

The past week has been a week of thinking. I've haven't been making any jewelry but instead have been thinking...about my business, about my blog, about the rest of my life.....and what needs to change and what I like and what I should do more of and what I should do less of....

So there will be some changes this year. Look out for them - and do offer feedback.

The first one is the subjects of my blogs. At times like this when I haven't made anything new to show you and tell you the story behind, what do I write about? What will interest you ? So here's something to start.

My 2008 year in town/cities. It's a list of the places I visited last year in date order, where I spent one or more nights.

Ormond Beach, FL
Sanibel Island, FL
Healdsburg, CA
Carmel, CA
Cheltenham, Ironbridge, Windrush Lake, London,UK
Vancouver, Canada
Seattle, WA
Portland, OR
Whidbey Island, WA
Bainbridge Island, WA
West Lafayette, IN
Cheltenham, Lincoln, Watford, London, UK
Half Moon Bay, CA

Interesting to seem them listed. There is alot of "water" involved in the list - islands, lakes, beaches, bays.....

Maybe if you have a blog, this could be our blog meme - ie you write out your towns/cities of 2008 too in your blog and let me know in the comments section so we can all take a look!

Wonder what travelling will come about in 2009? Nothing planned at present, except our usual trips back to England......

Busy fingers

I had sort of thought that whilst in England, I would have a break from creating...but I think my fingers have a different idea. Obviously silver work isn't very portable, but I did bring some knitting with me. I've missed knitting lately. I enjoy having a mindless, easy knitting project on the go that I can do while I watch television or am a passenger in the car, but also a project that requires a bit more concentration. But for the last few months, I haven't don't either.

When I was knitting and selling my creations, I'd spend hours clicking those needles and felting, but I wasn't doing so much silver work then. Since I've been doing more silver, I made the decision that my knitting would just be for me. Since I made that decision, I've started two jackets and not finished either of them and also started a wrap/scarf made from stainless steel yarn with a very fine merino. I finished the wrap the night before we flew over - but it needs a little gentle felting. I'm curious to see how it felts with the stainless steel.......

Anyhow, when packing my carry-on bag for the plane, I put in some yarn I bought a few months ago and a new pattern book - and today I finished my project- some fingerless gloves! I knitted for a while on the plane, but then did some more today at my mother-in-law's house, as I sat and chatted to her for a few hours. They are knitted in a silk and cotton - I think - but as I'd wound the yarn before I left, can't quite remember. Anyhow - feels like that.

The photos aren't very good I'm afraid as they were taken on an iphone in the evening without good lighting - but they give you an idea! - long cuffs, frilly bits.....not my usual style of knitting at all - but I quite like them. And as it's quite a bit colder here in England than northern CA, I will no doubt be wearing them for the next couple of weeks!!!!

Now what next for those fingers....maybe I'll be typing my blog in my fingerless gloves if it gets too cold!!
